Participants in this study were given short arguments to read, were asked their opinion of the argument, and then immediately asked to recall the argument verbatim. Most participants were unable to recall the argument as it was presented to them but rather remembered their own interpretation of the argument, oftentimes in ways that changed the meaning of the original argument.
