Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy: Relaxation and Self-Regulation Shown to Quicken Improvement Time in Patients with Panic Disorder
Yoga as a mindfulness-based practice has shown to have helped improve relaxation and self-regulation. Yoga with the combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has shown to be very effective. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is actually the first attempt to professionally combine both Eastern and Western approaches to mental health. Through the MBCT practice of yoga and CBT, it has been shown that though mindfulness via yoga is beneficial, the combination of yoga and psychotherapy made improvements in relaxation and self-regulation happen quicker. As seen in other similar studies, mindfulness-based practices combined with CBT allow for a quicker improvement time and allowed patients to better adhere to the program they were in. While there is more research to be done, it has been shown that while mindfulness based practices and CBT have slightly different approaches to issues, the combination in the form of MBCT allows the similarities of both individual practices to be combined and thus strengthened when used together.
