Multiplying a Mixed Length Measurement

To find the total length of four planks of wood that are each 66 feet 44 inches long, multiply each unit by 44 and then simplify:

  1. Multiply the inches: 4×4=164 \times 4 = 16 inches.
  2. Multiply the feet: 4×6=244 \times 6 = 24 feet.
  3. Intermediate result: 2424 feet 1616 inches.
  4. Convert the excess inches: Since 11 foot =12= 12 inches, divide 16÷12=116 \div 12 = 1 remainder 44, so 1616 inches =1= 1 foot 44 inches.
  5. Combine the feet: 24+1=2524 + 1 = 25 feet.

The total length is 2525 feet 44 inches. This example extends mixed-unit arithmetic to multiplication: multiply each unit component by the whole-number factor separately, then carry over whenever the smaller unit reaches or exceeds one full larger unit (1212 inches per foot).
