Mixed Units of Measurement in the US System

A quantity expressed in mixed units uses more than one unit of the same type simultaneously, such as 55 feet 1010 inches, 77 hours 4545 minutes, or 11 pound 22 ounces. Working with mixed US units involves several key skills:

Converting to a single unit: To express a mixed measurement in only the smaller unit, convert the larger-unit portion using the appropriate conversion factor and add the result to the smaller-unit portion. For example, 55 ft 33 in. =(5×12)+3=63= (5 \times 12) + 3 = 63 inches.

Converting to mixed units: To express a single-unit measurement in mixed form, divide by the conversion factor. The quotient gives the larger unit and the remainder gives the smaller unit. For example, 6363 in. =63÷12=5= 63 \div 12 = 5 remainder 33, so 6363 in. =5= 5 ft 33 in.

Arithmetic with mixed units: When performing arithmetic on mixed-unit quantities, operate on each unit separately, then simplify by carrying over whenever the smaller unit meets or exceeds one full larger unit.

  • Adding or subtracting: Combine like units (ounces with ounces, pounds with pounds), then convert and carry over if needed.
  • Multiplying: Multiply each unit component by the whole-number factor independently, then carry over and recombine.
