US Customary System of Measurement

The US customary system (also called the US system or English system) is the measurement system commonly used in the United States for everyday quantities. It organizes units into three main categories:

Length: inch (in.), foot (ft), yard (yd), mile (mi)

  • 11 foot =12= 12 inches
  • 11 yard =3= 3 feet
  • 11 mile =5,280= 5{,}280 feet

Weight: ounce (oz), pound (lb), ton

  • 11 pound =16= 16 ounces
  • 11 ton =2,000= 2{,}000 pounds

Capacity (liquid volume): cup (c), pint (pt), quart (qt), gallon (gal)

  • 11 pint =2= 2 cups
  • 11 quart =2= 2 pints
  • 11 gallon =4= 4 quarts

Unlike the metric system, the conversion factors between US customary units are not based on powers of 1010, so they must be memorized individually.
