BMI a poor metric for measuring people's health, say experts

BMI was initially developed based on white European males. Because of this, BMI does not accurately reflect the health of other racial and ethnic groups. 

Lack of diversity in BMI 

A key limitation of Body Mass Index (BMI) is its oversimplification of an individual's health, as it does not differentiate between the body's percentage of fat and muscle. This can be misleading; for instance, a highly fit athlete may have a high BMI due to significant muscle mass, not excess body fat.

BMI does not account for metabolic health aspects when used with patients. These factors have an impact on one's overall health.

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is considered a more effective tool for studying health trends across large populations, which is the primary work of organizations like the WHO and CDC. However, it is less reliable for assessing the health of a single individual because its simple height and weight measurements do not account for personal factors such as fitness level.

BMI's Utility in Population vs. Individual Assessment

Reflecting the growing concerns about its limitations, the American Medical Association (AMA) recommended in 2023 that Body Mass Index (BMI) should no longer be used as a standard, standalone measure of individual health.
