Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome
Neonatal abstinence syndrome occurs when infants experience drug withdrawal after birth due to prenatal exposure, particularly to opiates. Symptoms can include sleep problems, trembling, high-pitched crying, and sweating. In severe cases, such as with heroin exposure, withdrawal can lead to seizures and even death. Therefore, these infants require medically supervised, gradual weaning from the substance to manage the withdrawal safely.
