A common misconception in networking is that increasing bandwidth will inherently lower latency. However, bandwidth and latency measure fundamentally different performance characteristics of a network.

Bandwidth refers to the volume of data that can be transferred over a network connection per second. Latency, on the other hand, measures delay—the time it takes for data to travel from its source to its destination. Even on a connection with high bandwidth, a slow-to-respond link will still produce perceptible lag.

Bandwidth Versus Latency

Users often hold misconceptions regarding the privacy provided by secure connections and the precision of network addressing.

While HTTPS encrypts the contents of web pages, it does not hide all online activity. For example, standard DNS lookups can still reveal the specific sites and domains that a user is visiting.

Similarly, an IP address does not pinpoint a person's exact physical location. An IP address typically identifies only a general network or geographic region. Furthermore, multiple devices can share a single public IP address through Network Address Translation (NAT).

Security and Location Limitations in Network Protocols

A common belief is that the cloud is an abstract entity that operates without dedicated hardware.

In reality, cloud computing relies on physical infrastructure. The cloud consists of real data centers—essentially other people's computers—that are accessed and utilized remotely over network connections.
