Neuropilin-1 in the Pathogenesis of COVID-19

SARS-CoV-2 can enter host cells using the Neuropilin-1 receptor, in addition to the ACE2 receptor. Neuropilin-1 is abundant in many human tissues, including the respiratory tract, blood vessels, and neurons. Because ACE2 is often expressed at very low levels on cell surfaces, the more abundant presence of Neuropilin-1 may be one of the factors that contributes to the rapid spread of the virus.
