Newly diagnosed diabetes is associated with a higher risk of mortality than known diabetes in hospitalized patients with COVID‐19

• The objective of this study was to Evaluate the associations between different degrees of hyperglycemia and mortality in COVID-19 patients.

• The study was conducted in Wuhan, China from January 22nd to March 17th, 2020.

• 453 patients were involved in the study and were separated into four categories based on glycemic levels: normal glucose, hyperglycemia, newly diagnosed diabetes, and known diabetes.

• After adjusting for other variables of mortality, each category was assigned a mortality ratio compared to the baseline category of normal glucose.

• Normal glucose had a ratio of 1.00, hyperglycemia had a ratio of 3.29, newly diagnosed diabetes had a ratio of 9.42, and known diabetes had a ratio of 4.63.

• The study concluded that patients with newly diagnosed diabetes had the highest risk of mortality compared to other categories of patients with COVID-19.
