In Chapter 8, Poem 24 of the Mokhtar Nameh, Attar characterizes the path of spiritual love as one of complete submissiveness and ego sacrifice, symbolized by losing one's head. He explains that self-assertion is useless, and the only true remedy for the spiritual traveler is self-transcendence, or coming out of oneself, to overcome the illusion of separate existence.

عاشق شدن مرد زبون آمدنست	سر باختن است و سرنگون آمدنست
Becoming a lover is to become submissive, It is to lose one's head and to fall headlong.
بر خویش برون آمدنت چیزی نیست	تدبیر تو از خویش برون آمدنست
To come out for yourself is nothing; Your remedy is to come out of yourself.
