Operational Definition of Depression

Depression serves as a primary example of an abstract construct that researchers can operationally define in multiple ways to make it measurable. For instance, a researcher might measure it using a participant's score on a paper-and-pencil scale like the Beck Depression Inventory, by counting the total number of depressive symptoms reported, or by verifying whether the individual has a formal clinical diagnosis of major depressive disorder.
