Origin of Type A Behavior Research: The Worn-Out Chairs
The concept of a behavior pattern specific to cardiology patients emerged from an observation made by cardiologist Meyer Friedman in the 1950s. He noted that the chairs in his waiting room showed a distinct wear pattern—the front edges of the cushions and the tips of the armrests were worn down. This suggested that his patients were habitually sitting on the edge of their seats and tapping or squeezing the armrests, prompting an inquiry into whether heart patients were behaviorally different from others.
