Owners as Residual Claimants of a Firm

A firm's profit is the residual income left after deducting all contractual costs—including payments to employees, managers, suppliers, creditors, and taxes—from total revenues. The legal right to this profit belongs to the firm's owners, making them the residual claimants. This status distinguishes owners from employees and managers, who are not entitled to this residual income unless they also hold an ownership stake.
