Pharaoh's Bribes and the Hubris of the Sorcerers in the Masnavi

In Book Three, Section 48 of the Masnavi, Rumi depicts Pharaoh showering his summoned sorcerers with extravagant gifts, slaves, and promises of wealth to secure their loyalty against Moses. Emboldened by these material bribes, the sorcerers boast of their unmatched skill and prowess in magic. Rumi uses this interaction to illustrate how the ego (nafs) is easily seduced by worldly rewards and false confidence. This allegorical narrative contrasts the superficial power of material wealth and arrogance with the authentic, enduring power of divine truth represented by Moses.
