English translation

Book Three — Section 48 The Sorcerers Gathering from Madain before Pharaoh, Receiving Great Honors, and Striking Their Chests in Readiness to Subdue His Enemy, Saying: "Record This for Our Sake"

The sorcerers came before Pharaoh at last; He bestowed upon them honors weighty and great. He made them promises, and gave beforehand Servants and horses, cash and goods and provisions.

Then afterward he said: "Heed me, O forerunners — If you surpass all others in the trial, I will rain upon you such abundant gifts That the very veil of bounty and generosity is torn."

They answered him: "By your good fortune, O King, We shall prevail and his cause shall be ruined. In this craft we are rank-breakers and champions; No one in all the world can stand against us."

The mention of Moses has become a fetter on minds, For these are tales that belong to the past. The mention of Moses is merely for concealment — yet The light of Moses is your present reality, O good man.

Moses and Pharaoh both dwell within your being; These two adversaries must be sought within yourself. Until the Day of Resurrection, lineage flows from Moses; The light is not different — it is the lamp that has changed.

This clay and this wick are different, But the light is not different — it comes from that Source. If you gaze upon the glass you will be lost, For from the glass arises the multiplicity of duality.

But if you gaze upon the light you will be freed From duality and the numbers that terminate in body. It is from the vantage point, O marrow of existence, That difference arises between the believer, the gabr, and the Jew.
