Book Three - Section 134 - The Answer of the Prophets, Peace Be Upon Them, to the Determinists

Original content

English translation

The Prophets said: He created certain attributes from which one cannot withdraw — And He created accidental attributes such that one who was hated may become pleasing.

To tell a stone "become gold" is futile; to tell copper "become gold" — there is a path. To tell sand "become clay" is impossible; to tell soil "become clay" is permissible.

He has given afflictions for which there is no cure — like lameness, flat-nosedness, and blindness. He has given afflictions for which there is a cure — like facial palsy and headache.

These medicines He made for reconciliation; these pains and their medicines are not in vain. Rather, most afflictions have a remedy: when you seek earnestly, it will come to hand.
