English translation

The people said: "O ye sincere counselors, enough! What you have said — were there anyone in this village to heed it!

God has placed a lock upon our hearts; None can outpace the Creator.

The Image-maker fashioned us this image; This will not become other through talk and discourse.

Tell a stone for a hundred years: 'Become a ruby!' Tell the old for a hundred years: 'Be new!'

Tell dust to take on the qualities of water, Tell water: 'Become honey, or milk!'

He is the Creator of the heavens and the heavenly beings, The Creator of water and earth and those of the earth.

To the sky He gave revolution and purity; To water and clay He gave murky face and semblance.

How can the sky ever choose the dregs? How can water and clay ever purchase purity?

He has apportioned a path to each and every one; How can straw become a mountain through striving, when it is but straw?"
