Book Three - Section 122 - The People Demanding a Miracle from the Prophets

Original content

English translation

The people said: “O band of claimants, where is the proof of your healing knowledge and usefulness? Since you are bound to this same sleeping and eating, you are like us, grazing in the village. Since you are trapped in this water and clay, how can you be hunters of the Simorgh of the heart? Love of rank and lordship belongs to whoever counts himself among the prophets. We do not want this sort of boast and lie poured into our ears, nor to be taken in by deceit.” The prophets said: “This is because of that illness; the cause of blindness is the veil of your own opinion or doubt. You have heard our claim, yet you do not see this jewel in our hand. This jewel is a trial for creatures; we turn it around before their eyes. Whoever says, ‘Where is the witness?’ that very saying is his witness: that he does not see the jewel is captivity in blindness. A sun has come into speech, saying, ‘Rise, for day has risen; jump up and quarrel less.’ You say, ‘O sun, where is the witness?’ It says to you, ‘Blind one, ask God for eyes.’ Whoever seeks a lamp in broad daylight, the very seeking plainly reports his blindness. If you do not see, you have only guessed that morning has come while you are behind a veil. Do not make your own blindness public with this speech; be silent and wait for grace. To say at midday, ‘Where is the day?’ is to disgrace yourself, O seeker of day. Patience and silence draw mercy, and this seeking of signs is a sign of illness. Accept ‘listen in silence,’ so that from the Beloved the reward of ‘listen in silence’ may come upon your soul. If you do not want a relapse before this physician, throw gold and head to the ground, O intelligent one. Sell the surplus and purchase the offering of soul, the offering of rank, and the offering of gold, so that His grace may praise you and the heavens envy your station. When you keep your hearts with the physicians, you will see yourselves and become ashamed of yourselves. The removal of this blindness is not in the hands of creatures, but honoring the physicians comes from guidance. Become servants in soul to these physicians, so that you may be filled with musk and ambergris.”
