آنچنانک حق ز گوشت و استخوان
از شهان باب صغیری ساخت هان

اهل دنیا سجدهٔ ایشان کنند
چونک سجدهٔ کبریا را دشمنند

ساخت سرگین دانکی محرابشان
نام آن محراب میر و پهلوان

لایق این حضرت پاکی نه اید
نیشکر پاکان شما خالی نیید

آن سگان را این خسان خاضع شوند
شیر را عارست کو را بگروند

گربه باشد شحنه هر موش خو
موش که بود تا ز شیران ترسد او

خوف ایشان از کلاب حق بود
خوفشان کی ز آفتاب حق بود

ربی الاعلاست ورد آن مهان
رب ادنی درخور این ابلهان

موش کی ترسد ز شیران مصاف
بلک آن آهوتگان مشک ناف

رو به پیش کاسه لیس ای دیگ لیس
توش خداوند و ولی نعمت نویس

بس کن ار شرحی بگویم دور دست
خشم گیرد میر و هم داند که هست

حاصل این آمد که بد کن ای کریم
با لئیمان تا نهد گردن لئیم

با لئیم نفس چون احسان کند
چون لئیمان نفس بد کفران کند

زین سبب بد که اهل محنت شاکرند
اهل نعمت طاغیند و ماکرند

هست طاغی بگلر زرین قبا
هست شاکر خستهٔ صاحب عبا

شکر کی روید ز املاک و نعم
شکر می روید ز بلوی و سقم

English translation

Just as Haqq, from flesh and bone,\nHas fashioned of kings a small gate — heed!\nThe people of the world prostrate before them,\nSince they are enemies of prostration before the Almighty (Kibriyā).\nHe made a dung-heap their prayer-niche (miḥrāb);\nThe name of that miḥrāb: Amīr and Pahlavān.\nYou are not worthy of this pure Presence;\nYou are not the sugarcane of the pure, you are empty reeds.\nThese base ones become submissive to those dogs;\nIt is a disgrace for a lion that they should cling to it.\nA cat serves as constable (shāḥna) for every mouse-natured one;\nWhat is a mouse, that it should fear lions?\nTheir fear is of the dogs of Haqq;\nHow could their fear be of the sun of Haqq?\n"Rabbī al-A'lā" is the litany (wird) of those great ones;\n"Rabb al-Adnā" befits these fools.\nWhat mouse fears lions in battle array?\nRather, those musk-naveled fawns do.\nGo before the bowl-licker, O pot-licker;\nWrite him as your master and patron (walī-yi ni'mat).\nEnough! If I give a far-reaching explanation,\nThe amīr will grow angry — and yet will know it is true.\nThe upshot of all this is: do ill, O noble one,\nToward the vile, so that the vile one bows his neck.\nWhen one does good to the vile soul (nafs),\nThe vile soul repays goodness with ingratitude, as the vile do.\nFor this reason, those in affliction are grateful,\nWhile those in prosperity are rebellious and crafty.\nThe rebellious one is the begler in the golden robe (zarīn-qabā);\nThe grateful one is the weary one in the cloak (ṣāḥib-'abā).\nHow can gratitude grow from estates and riches?\nGratitude grows from trials and illness (saqam).
