Original content

English translation

He prostrated and said: 'O Knower of burning ardor, cast that radiance into David's heart. Put in his heart what You have cast into mine, and disclose it, O my Benefactor.' He said this and burst into loud weeping, until David's heart was moved from its place. David said: 'Now, today, O claimant of the ox, give me time and do not dig into these claims, so that I may go to solitude in prayer and ask the Knower of secrets about these matters. I am accustomed in prayer to this turning toward God, the meaning of 'the delight of my eye is in prayer.' The window of my soul has been opened by purity; God's letter reaches me without intermediary. Letter, rain, and light fall through my window into my house from my source. A house with no window is hell; the root of religion, servant, is to make a window. Stop striking your axe at every thicket; come, strike the axe to cut open a window. Or do you not know that visible sunlight is the sun's reflection from beyond the veil? If the light you know is the light that animals also see, then what becomes of 'We honored' for Adam? I am like the sun, drowned in light; I cannot tell myself apart from light. My going toward prayer and that seclusion is to teach people the way. I set it crooked so that this world may be made straight; this is war as stratagem, champion. There is no permission; otherwise dust would be stirred up from the sea of secrets.' David was speaking in this manner; the people's intellects were about to be burned up. Then the One from behind pulled him by the collar, the One whose oneness I do not doubt. He came back to himself, shortened his speech, closed his lips, and set out for the place of seclusion.
