Book Three - Section 66 - The Children's Mothers Going to Visit the Master

Original content

English translation

At dawn those mothers came; the master lay sleeping like a gravely ill patient, sweating too beneath the weight of many blankets, his head bound, his face drawn into the curtain's hem. He was softly heaving sighs of "ah," and all of them became reciters of "lā ḥawla." "May all be well, Master — this headache — by your life, we had no knowledge of this." He said: "I too was unaware of this; the grumbling ones' mothers made me aware of it — mark this! I was heedless, absorbed in words and dispute, while inwardly there lay such a heavy affliction. When a person is earnestly preoccupied, he is blind to perceiving his own pain. Joseph became a tale told among the women of Egypt, for from their preoccupation, awareness departed them — having cut their forearms to pieces, the soul enraptured, seeing neither behind nor before. How many a brave man in battle whose hand or foot is severed by a blow — he brings that same hand into the fray, supposing it to still be as it was, then sees for himself: the hand is gone, lost to harm, much blood having flowed from him, unawares."
