دفتر سوم - بخش ۵۸ - مثال رنجور شدن آدمی به‌وَهم تعظیم خلق و رغبت مشتریان به‌وی و حکایت معلم / Book Three - Section 58 - An Example of a Person Becoming Ill Through the Delusion of People's Veneration and Customers' Desire for Him, and the Tale of the Teacher

Original content

English translation

The schoolboys suffered distress from the master, Due to weariness and exertion.

They consulted on how to delay the work, So that the teacher would fall into desperation.

"Since no illness comes to him, That he might take a leave for a few days,

So that we may escape from prison, constraint, and work, He is firmly established like a solid rock."

One who was more clever devised this plan, To say, "Master, why are you pale?

May it be well! Your color is not normal, This effect is either from the weather or from a fever."

"He will fall slightly into delusion from this. You, brother, also help in this way:

When you come in through the school door, say, 'May it be well, Master, how is your condition?'

That delusion of his will increase a little, For from a delusion, an intelligent man can go mad.

That third, and that fourth, and fifth, likewise, Following us, let them show sorrow and lamentation;

Until, when thirty children consecutively Speak this news in agreement, it will become established."

Each one said to him, "Bravo, O clever one! May your fortune rely on Divine grace!"

They became united in a firm pact, That not one friend would alter his word.

After that, he made them all swear, So that no talebearer would tell the story.

The opinion of that child outweighed them all; His intellect walked ahead of the flock.

There is such difference in the intellect of human beings, As there is among beauties in their physical forms.

For this reason, Ahmad (Muhammad) said in a discourse: "The beauty of men is hidden in their tongues."
