Book Three - Section 202 - Mentioning the Evil Imagination of Those Deficient in Understanding

Original content

English translation

Before this story reaches its conclusion, A smoke and stench arose from the people of envy. I am not pained by this, yet this kick May bruise the heart of a simple-souled one. That sage of Ghazna spoke beautifully, A spiritual parable for those who are veiled: That if from the Quran one sees nothing but the outer word, This is no wonder among the companions of error — For from the rays of the sun, full of light, A blind eye finds nothing but warmth. Suddenly a dullard from some ass-stable Thrust his head out like a detractor, Saying: "This speech is base — I mean the Masnavi — It is stories of prophets and the following of their ways. There is no mention of lofty discourse and secrets Toward which the saints race their steeds, From the stations of devotion (tabattul) to annihilation (fana), Step by step to the encounter with God — The exposition and boundary of each station and waystation, By which a person of heart might take wing and soar." Just as when the Book of God came, the unbelievers likewise Cast such slanders against it: "It is legends and wretched fables, There is no profound inquiry nor lofty investigation; Even young children can grasp it — It is nothing but commands of approval and disapproval. The mention of Joseph, the mention of his curl-filled hair, The mention of Jacob, Zulaykha, and her grief. It is outward, and everyone grasps it — Where is the exposition in which the intellect becomes lost?" He said: "If this seems easy to you, Then produce one sura this easily. Let all the jinn and humans and people of craft Bring forth one verse this easy."
