همچو مجنون کاو سگی را می نواخت
بوسه اش می داد و پیشش می گداخت

گرد او می گشت خاضع در طواف
هم جلاب شکرش می داد صاف

بوالفضولی گفت ای مجنون خام
این چه شیدست این که می آری مدام

پوز سگ دایم پلیدی می خورد
مقعد خود را به لب می استرد

عیبهای سگ بسی او بر شمرد
عیب دان از غیب دان بویی نبرد

گفت مجنون تو همه نقشی و تن
اندر آ و بنگرش از چشم من

کاین طلسم بستهٔ مولیست این
پاسبان کوچهٔ لیلیست این

همنشین بین و دل و جان و شناخت
کاو کجا بگزید و مسکن گاه ساخت

او سگ فرخ رخ کهف منست
بلک او هم درد و هم لهف منست

آن سگی که باشد اندر کوی او
من به شیران کی دهم یک موی او

ای که شیران مر سگانش را غلام
گفت امکان نیست خامش والسلام

گر ز صورت بگذرید ای دوستان
جنت است و گلستان در گلستان

صورت خود چون شکستی سوختی
صورت کل را شکست آموختی

بعد از آن هر صورتی را بشکنی
همچو حیدر باب خیبر بر کنی

سغبهٔ صورت شد آن خواجهٔ سلیم
که به ده می شد به گفتاری سقیم

سوی دام آن تملق شادمان
همچو مرغی سوی دانهٔ امتحان

از کرم دانست مرغ آن دانه را
غایت حرص است نه جود آن عطا

مرغکان در طمع دانه شادمان
سوی آن تزویر پران و دوان

گر ز شادی خواجه آگاهت کنم
ترسم ای ره رو که بیگاهت کنم

مختصر کردم چو آمد ده پدید
خود نبود آن ده ره دیگر گزید

قرب ماهی ده به ده می تاختند
زانک راه ده نکو نشناختند

هر که در ره بی قلاوزی رود
هر دو روزه راه صدساله شود

هر که تازد سوی کعبه بی دلیل
همچو این سرگشتگان گردد ذلیل

هر که گیرد پیشه ای بی اوستا
ریش خندی شد به شهر و روستا

جز که نادر باشد اندر خافقین
آدمی سر بر زند بی والدین

مال او یابد که کسبی می کند
نادری باشد که بر گنجی زند

مصطفایی کو که جسمش جان بود
تا که رحمن علم القرآن بود

اهل تن را جمله علم بالقلم
واسطه افراشت در بذل کرم

هر حریصی هست محروم ای پسر
چون حریصان تگ مرو آهسته تر

اندر آن ره رنجها دیدند و تاب
چون عذاب مرغ خاکی در عذاب

سیر گشته از ده و از روستا
وز شکرریز چنان نا اوستا

English translation

Like Majnun, who was caressing a dog,\nKissing it and melting before it;\nHe circled around it humbly, as in circumambulation,\nAnd also gave it clear sugared julep.\nA meddler said, "O raw Majnun,\nWhat continual frenzy is this that you display?\nA dog's snout is always eating filth;\nWith its lips it wipes its own anus."\nHe counted many faults of the dog;\nA fault-knower has no scent of an unseen-knower.\nMajnun said, "You are wholly image and body;\nCome in, and look at it through my eyes.\nFor this is a talisman bound by the Lord;\nThis is the watchman of Layla's lane.\nLook at its companionship, heart, soul, and discernment:\nwhere it chose and made its dwelling.\nIt is the blessed-faced dog of my Cave;\nIndeed, it shares my pain and my burning grief.\nThe dog that is in her quarter,\nWould I give one hair of it for lions?\nO you whose lions are slaves to her dogs!"\nHe said, "It is impossible; be silent, and peace."\n\nIf you pass beyond form, friends,\nIt is paradise, and garden within garden.\nWhen you have broken and burned your own form,\nYou have learned to break the form of all.\nAfter that, you will break every form,\nLike Haydar uprooting the gate of Khaybar.\n\nThat simple gentleman was duped by form,\nWhen he went to a village because of a sick speech;\nHappily toward the snare of that flattery,\nLike a bird toward the grain of trial.\nThe bird regarded that grain as generosity;\nThat gift was the height of greed, not bounty.\nThe little birds, joyful in desire for grain,\nFly and run toward that deceit.\nIf I tell you of the gentleman's joy,\nI fear, wayfarer, that I will keep you back untimely.\nI have made it brief: when a village appeared,\nIt was not that village; he chose another road.\nFor nearly a month they hurried from village to village,\nBecause they did not know the road to the village well.\nWhoever goes on the road without a guide,\nFor him a two-day road becomes a hundred-year road.\nWhoever rushes toward the Ka'ba without a guide\nBecomes abased like these bewildered ones.\nWhoever takes up a craft without a master\nBecomes a laughingstock in town and countryside.\nExcept in rare cases in the two horizons,\nA human being does not rise up without parents.\nWealth is found by one who practices a trade;\nRare is the one who strikes upon a treasure.\nWhere is a Mustafa, whose body was soul,\nSo that the Merciful Himself was "He taught the Qur'an"?\nFor people of the body, all knowledge is "by the pen";\nAn intermediary was raised up in the giving of grace.\nEvery greedy person is deprived, son;\nDo not run like the greedy: go more slowly.\nOn that road they saw hardships and burning,\nLike the torment of an earthbound bird in torment,\nFed up with village and countryside,\nAnd with such an unmasterly scatterer of sugar.
