Book Three - Section 201 - The Rest of the Story of the Guest of That Guest-Killing Mosque and His Steadfastness and Sincerity

Text and Translation

That stranger seeking the uphill city
Said: I shall sleep in this mosque tonight.
O mosque, if you become my Karbala,
You shall be the Ka'ba that fulfills my needs.
Heed — leave me be, O chosen gallows,
That I may play the rope-game like Mansur.
If you become Gabriel in counsel,
Abraham in the fire needs no ghawth.
O Gabriel, go — for I am kindled;
I am better, like burning aloe-wood and ambergris.
O Gabriel, though you give aid,
You guard me as a brother would.
O brother, I am nimble upon fire;
I am not that soul that grows more or less.
The animal soul grows from fodder;
It was a fire, and when it became firewood, it perished.
Had it not become firewood, it would have borne fruit,
Flourishing and thriving forever.
Know that the scorching wind is this fire:
It is the reflection of fire, not its very essence.
The very essence of fire is, in truth, in the ether;
Its reflection and shadow are upon the earth.
Inevitably the reflection does not endure, being restless;
It hastens back to its source.
Your stature has settled into its place — be composed;
Your shadow is short one moment, long the next.
For in the reflection no one finds stability;
Reflections return to their origins.
Heed — seal the mouth; strife has opened its lips;
Hush: Allah knows best the right way.
