Original content

English translation

Balaam son of Beor and the accursed Iblis were brought low by the final trial. He, with his claims, inclines toward fortune, while his stomach curses his mustache.

"Make manifest what he conceals; he has burned us — O God, expose him!"

All the members of his body are his enemies, for he boasts of spring while they are in want. He makes empty claims of generosity and uproots the branch of mercy from its root.

Bring forth truthfulness, or be silent, and then behold mercy and drink it in.

That belly had become the enemy of his mustache and secretly raised its hand in prayer: "O God, expose this vile boasting, that the mercy of the noble may stir toward us."

The prayer of that belly was answered; the clamor of need raised its banner outward.

The Truth said: "Though you be a libertine and an idolater, when you call upon Me, I grant you answers. Hold fast to prayer and keep crying out — in the end it will deliver you from the demon's grip."

When he had surrendered his belly to the Divine Presence, a cat came and carried off the fat-tail. They chased after the cat; it fled, and the child, fearing reproof, went pale.

That little child came into the gathering and stripped the honor from the boastful man. He said: "That fat tail with which every morning you greased your lips and mustache — a cat came and snatched it suddenly; we ran and ran, but the effort was of no use."

Laughter overtook those present out of amazement, and their mercies began to stir once more. They invited him and fed him to satiety and sowed the seed of mercy in his soil.

When he tasted truthfulness from the noble ones, without pride he became the slave of truthfulness.
