The plausibility structure refers to sociocultural beliefs and practices that imply certain meanings to various constructs. Therefore, in terms of disability, the plausibility structure describes normalized sociocultural norms and attitudes related to impairment. These beliefs can be prosocial or prejudicial.

During this phase, the disability civil rights movement defined the problem in terms of the social mistreatment people with disabilities face as a result of social organization and structure. 


Introduction of the Disability Civil Rights Movement


Because the medical model presumes disability to be a personal problem, it ignores variations in illness and impairment. Thus, impairment is not always temporary and does the fit Parsons “sick role” criteria because this theory does not account for those with chronic illness.

The Development of the Disability Civil Rights Movement Occurred in Three Phases:


Without proper policy and legislation in place, the movement, first, aimed to explain the reason why such social adjustments are necessary to the wellbeing of the disability community. These changes would address the problem and create space for all abilities in society.

Phase One: defining the problem 

During phase two, individuals have come to a consensus that a problem does exist and collectively come up with a solution to attempt to eliminate the injustice. These solutions can occur at both governmental and nongovernmental levels. 


Phase Two: finding a solution



With any type of social change comes its challenges because people must adapt to the new norms that form as a result of the shift. After solutions are implemented, different individuals will perceive this change differently and could result in some old problems continuing and new problems arising.
