 -The disability civil rights movement lacks involvement in health care reform decisions because of the differentiation of the terms health and disability. 
- The disability civil rights movement has had commentary on abortion and minimizing legal physician-assisted suicides.


Unintended Consequences of Redefining Disability Using the Social Model


- No unifying strategy to enforce new policy and legislation led to confronting these policies on a case-by-case basis which leaves room for misinterpreting compliance and enforcement to protect PWD. 
- Concepts within ADA lack common meaning 
- Supreme Court has not been considering new legislation in some cases
- ADA does not protect people with treatable conditions


Unintended Consequences of Implementing New Legislation


- Redefines the “pity” narrative with empowerment through advocacy and activism
- Feelings of shame and guilt transformed into more positive views of self 


Aftermath of Successful CIL’s  


With any type of social change comes its challenges because people must adapt to the new norms that form as a result of the shift. After solutions are implemented, different individuals will perceive this change differently and could result in some old problems continuing and new problems arising.

The Development of the Disability Rights Movement as a Social Problem Solver 

This phase consists of explaining the problem and where the problem originates from. 


Phase One: defining the problem 

During phase two, individuals have come to a consensus that a problem does exist and collectively come up with a solution to attempt to eliminate the injustice. These solutions can occur at both governmental and nongovernmental levels. 


Phase Two: finding a solution



Without proper policy and legislation in place, the movement, first, aimed to explain the reason why such social adjustments are necessary to the wellbeing of the disability community. These changes would address the problem and create space for all abilities in society.
