Physiological Mechanisms of Sexual Behavior: Lessons from Animals
Much of our understanding of the physiological underpinnings of sexual behavior and motivation stems from research on animals. The hypothalamus is a key brain region for motivated behaviors, including sex. Animal studies have been instrumental in revealing that different neural systems might govern the motivation for sex versus the physical ability to engage in it, a concept demonstrated clearly in research on rats.
