Role of the Limbic System in Sexual Motivation

Animal studies indicate that structures within the limbic system, specifically the amygdala and nucleus accumbens, are crucial for sexual motivation. When these areas are damaged, an animal's motivation to engage in sexual activity decreases significantly, but its physical capacity to perform remains unaffected. This separation of sexual motivation from sexual ability has been documented in both male and female rats, suggesting that distinct neural systems regulate these two aspects of sexual behavior.
