Pilot evaluation of a mindfulness-based intervention to improve quality of life among individuals who sustained traumatic brain injuries - Method
- Research design: Pre-post design with drop-outs as controls
- Participants: Sample of 21 participants who met the criteria of being able to speak English, aged between 18-65, completion of traditional rehabilitation interventions, and had a realistic grasp of their condition.
- Intervention: A weekly, 12-week group intervention based on Kabat-Zinn's MBSR program and Kolb's experiential learning cycle. The primary techniques used were insight meditation, breathing exercises, guided visualization, and group discussions.
- The intervention sought to encourage a new way of thinking amongst participants to help them accept their situation and push them beyond limiting beliefs.
- Scales used: Short Form Health survey (SF-36) for quality of life, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) for depression symptoms, Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and Multidimensional Health Locus for Control Scale (MHLC) for other psychological domains, Global Severity Index (GSI) for the intensity of symptoms, Positive Symptom Distress Index (PSDI) for specific symptom intensity, and Community Integration Questionnaire (CIQ) for function.
