Potential role of NO reducing COVID-19 triggered oxidative stress

SARS-CoV2 has been shown to trigger oxidative stress, an overaccumulation of free radicals. This leads to an autoimmune response which results in inflammation. Under normal conditions, nitric oxide synthase plays a role in reducing oxidative species, which would in turn reduce the amount of resulting inflammation. In patients with SARS, inhalation of NO has improved arterial oxygenation. Clinical trials are underway to understand the affects of inducible NO in patients with SARS CoV-2.
