Poverty's Impact on the Prefrontal Cortex

Research demonstrates that children living in poverty exhibit reduced prefrontal brain functioning. This functional impairment is comparable to the cognitive deficits observed in children who have sustained physical damage to the lateral prefrontal cortex. The pervasive, daily stress associated with poverty—such as chronic worry about basic necessities like safety, shelter, and food—is believed to negatively affect brain development and function, contributing to lower IQ scores.
