Case Study

Production Technology Decision

A manufacturing firm needs to produce a batch of goods. It has three available production technologies, each with different requirements for labor and coal:

  • Technology A: Requires 10 workers and 2 tonnes of coal.
  • Technology B: Requires 6 workers and 4 tonnes of coal.
  • Technology C: Requires 2 workers and 8 tonnes of coal.

Initially, the wage for a worker is $20, and the price of coal is $30 per tonne. Later, the price of coal falls to $10 per tonne, while the wage remains unchanged.

Based on this information, identify the cost-minimizing technology for the firm in both price scenarios and explain why the optimal choice changes.
