Prophase is the first phase of karyokinesis in eukaryotic mitosis. During this stage, chromosomes condense to become visible, spindle fibers emerge from the centrosomes, the nuclear envelope breaks down, and the nucleolus disappears.

Metaphase is the third phase of mitotic karyokinesis. During this stage, the mitotic spindle is fully developed, centrosomes are positioned at opposite poles of the cell, and chromosomes line up along the metaphase plate with each sister chromatid attached to a spindle fiber from opposite poles.

Anaphase is the fourth phase of mitotic karyokinesis. During this stage, the cohesin proteins binding sister chromatids break down, allowing the sister chromatids (now individual chromosomes) to move toward opposite cellular poles. Concurrently, non-kinetochore spindle fibers lengthen, causing the cell to elongate.
