Protocol Data Encapsulation and Decapsulation
Encapsulation is the process where data descending through protocol layers on a sending device is wrapped with a layer-specific header at each step. Conversely, as received data ascends through the layers on the target device, each corresponding header is inspected and stripped away in reverse order.
