In the United States, there has been a lack of justice and corrections from the history of slavery, discrimination, racism, etc. to the African-American communities. This has created unhealed wounds and feelings of betrayal from society. This likely led to impairments in one's ability to forgive their partners.

Forgiving

Throughout United States History, there has been numerous instances (e.g. slavery, Tuskegee Syphilis Study, etc.) which led to the development of mistrust and feelings of unfairness towards social institutions and society at large. The authors suggest that it is likely that this carries over to interpersonal relationships. In other words, people might not trust other people or societally approved activities that endorse trust (e.g. marriage).

Psychological constraints refer to current and historical situations which led to the development of certain psychological traits or tendencies that constrain African-American’s tendencies to want to engage in relationships and marriage.
