The principle of proximity is a Gestalt principle for organizing sensory stimuli which asserts that things that are close to one another tend to be grouped together. Because of this principle, elements arranged near each other are perceived as more related than those placed further apart, and are viewed as a group rather than as individual elements.

An example illustrating the principle of proximity uses two arrangements of thirty-six dots. The first arrangement (a) shows the dots in a grid of six evenly spaced rows and columns, where they are perceived as a single group. The second arrangement (b) shows the same dots in six rows, but with the columns grouped into three sets of two. In this case, the dots are perceived as three distinct groups because of the closer proximity of the dots within each set.

The concept of proximity is clearly evident in our reading habits. We visually organize letters into distinct words because they are positioned adjacently without gaps, whereas we recognize boundaries between words due to the inserted spaces. This fundamental grouping process enables fluent reading; when spaces are inappropriately placed—such as in 'notl iket hiso rt hat' or 'Cany oum akes enseo ft hiss entence?'—the text becomes exceedingly difficult to decode.
