Rent Affects Free Time Choice with Cobb-Douglas Utility

In cases where preferences are modeled by a Cobb-Douglas utility function, a fixed rent payment affects a tenant's optimal choice of free time. This is because the Marginal Rate of Substitution (MRS) for this type of utility function depends on both the level of consumption (cc) and the amount of free time (tt). Since paying rent reduces consumption, it alters the MRS at every possible amount of free time, thereby changing the tenant's optimal allocation compared to what they would choose without a rent obligation.
