The study concluded that parents of children with disabilities are at increased risk of experiencing mental health problems. While these concerns are well documented, services have lagged behind. More adequate services (particularly for parents with relatively low household income, parents who live outside capital cities, and parents who don’t speak English at home) have the potential to improve outcomes for parents and their children. Health professionals should be aware of these risks so effective interventions and support strategies can be provided. Public policies such as financial assistance and increased attention can also improve the mental health of these parents.
