Resource Consumption in Distributive Conflicts

A key element of Pareto's conflict theory is that the struggle over distribution is not costless. Resources that could otherwise be used for production are instead consumed in appropriation activities. For example, money spent on litigation, lobbying, or corporate security represents a diversion of capital and labor from creating new goods and services. From this perspective, these expenditures are a significant, yet often overlooked, component of economic activity that reduces overall societal wealth.
