Plans are the commitments, rules, and routines established to provide direction for behavioral change. Formation and recall are the first steps in in PRIME theory. Some examples include coping strategies, journaling, and mental to-do lists.

Impulses are patterns of brain activity that coordinate and impel responses, while inhibitions are patterns of brain activity that work directly oppose these. Both patterns arise from learned or innate associations between stimuli and responses. Mindfulness, CBT, and other psychological interventions are helpful in reprogramming behaviors.

Motives are wants and needs that arise internally or externally. PRIME theory targets the management of momentary wants and assessing the appropriateness of their fulfillment in the context of planned lifestyle goals.

Motives in PRIME Theory

Evaluation comprises one's beliefs about what is right and wrong, good or bad, beneficial or harmful to their lifestyle. Personal values are central to evaluation of outcomes. Beliefs must be active at the moment of impulse to influence the resulting behavior.
