Results for Question 2 in Gender Gap Study- Changing Reasons for Both Genders
For the second research question (why students chose to major in computer science and what changes there were or not over time regarding said reasons), results indicated, for both genders regarding reasons that changed over time:
- students who had a preference for academics were increasingly likely over time to become a computer science student
- students who had leadership qualities or wanted to raise a family were increasingly likely to not join computer science, especially as time passed
- initially, a student's math self-concept and their family's income were indicators of positive and negative intent (respectively) to become a computer science student but these factors have been less likely to be predictive of joining the computer science major as time passed
- high school academic achievement: for men, this factor became more and more likely to indicate joining computer science the lower their grades were in high school
- for women, high school achievement used to indicate greater likelihood of becoming a computer science major but this predictive factor became less so over time
