Retainage as a Deferred Asset

Retainage is money the contractor has earned but has not yet collected. On a $420,000 electrical project with 7% retainage, $29,400 may be billed but still unavailable until the owner or lender releases it, often after closeout. This delay can create a cash shortage even when the job is profitable on paper. Forecasts should show the withheld amount as a separate deferred receivable so the timing gap is obvious in every period.
