al-Harith al-Muhasibi was the first to argue that rida (contentment or satisfaction with God) belongs to the ahwal — the spiritual states that descend as divine gifts and are not attained through the seeker's own effort — rather than to the maqamat, the earned stations of the Sufi path. The people of Khurasan adopted his position, while the Iraqis held that rida is itself one of the maqamat and the culmination of tawakkul (trust in God). Hujwiri records in Kashf al-Mahjub that this disagreement over how to classify rida persisted among the Sufis down to his own day, and he takes up the excerpt in order to explain it.
