Section 2 - As for the Muhasibiyya

Original content

English translation

The allegiance of the Muhasibis is to Abu Abdullah al-Harith ibn al-Asad al-Muhasibi, may Allah be pleased with him. By the agreement of all the people of his age he was accepted in soul and in speech, and learned in the principles and branches of the realities. His discourse proceeds upon the isolation (tajrid) of divine unity (tawhid), together with the soundness of outward and inward conduct. The rare peculiarity of his doctrine is that he does not reckon contentment (rida) among the stations (maqamat); rather he says that it is among the states (ahwal). He was the first to originate this difference; then the people of Khurasan took up this saying, while the Iraqis said that contentment is among the stations and is the utmost degree of trust (tawakkul). To this day this disagreement remains among the community, and now we shall expound this matter, God willing.
