Rise of Consumer Culture during the British Industrial Revolution

The mass production of goods made possible by the Industrial Revolution led to the emergence of a new consumer culture in Britain. For the first time, a wide variety of affordable goods became available to a growing middle class. This spurred the development of new retail practices, such as department stores and advertising, and shifted societal values towards the acquisition of material possessions as a marker of status and identity.
