Role of Medication in Substance Abuse Treatment

Medication is a key component of substance abuse treatment, serving several critical functions. It is used to safely manage detoxification after an overdose, prevent severe withdrawal symptoms like seizures and agitation, and help individuals avoid relapsing. While essential, this treatment approach has its own risks, as some medications used in the process can be addictive. The detoxification phase itself is often a difficult and hazardous process for the individual.
