Role of the Sympathetic Nervous System in the James-Lange Theory

In the context of the James-Lange theory of emotion, the sympathetic nervous system is responsible for initiating the significant physiological arousal required for an emotion to occur. For example, encountering a threat activates this system to increase heart rate and respiration, and according to the theory, the subsequent feeling of fear is only experienced after this physical arousal has taken place.
